story sketch: tin man [update: 05-15-2011]

This scene is from the first chapter of Tin Man. Necromancer Robling Tremare considers hiring mercenary archer Liane Sharpshaft as a bodyguard to compensate for the deficiencies of his current travel companion, the plate mail golem, as he continues on his quest to avenge the vanished Tremare Guild.

OK, so there's a plate with a butter knife and a...tuning wrench?

I like the flowers on the mail.

I figured it was an adjusting tool--or maybe a feeding tube--for the golem!

I love the golem. He is perfect. Robling looks sweet too.

The background may be a bit too dark, though. The heavy outlines help the characters stand out, but there's little contrast. How much lighting is supposed to be in this scene? If it's not explicitly dim, lightening the background slightly would pop out the characters more.

If it's supposed to be dark, I wouldn't want to undercut that. Sometimes lighting in a picture is just challenging. Maybe you can figure something out, though. I have faith in your artistic ability.

It is described as the darkest corner -- I wonder if maybe darkening the background would address the contrast issue?

I like the details on the golem, and the braids on the blonde, as well as the clothing details on both of them.

It's amazing how much detail you work into the rough sketches! The golem is a handsome beast; I hope you get enough feedback to post the cleaned-up sketch, because I'd like to see more of the details on it.

I can just hear the golem thinking, "...Bowties are cool." :)

XD You need to write a character in a fez now...

Also, six commenters! Will work on it some more...

(Yay, LJ has finally loaded it for me!) Oo, I like the darker background, and the bit where it's more visible that the shadow the golem is casting is lighter where it's coming through the empty visor is cool!
