story sketch: ayla's change [update: 05-19-2011]

In this scene from [personal profile] aldersprig's series Addergoole Aelgifu (Ayla), a hitherto unusually named, but otherwise normal human, leans on her lover, Ioanna for support when she finds herself with rabbit ears, bunny feet, and goatlike horns after her Change.

Ayla has just gone through her Change, getting rabbit ears, bunny feet, and horns. She leans against Ioanna, her lover, for emotional and physical support, touching her ears and horns.

cleaned up sketch:

They are so cute! The expressions really make the picture.

Is Ayla supposed to be plantigrade or digitigrade with her bunny feet? These look plantigrade.

Huh, according to Wikipedia rabbits are digitigrade, but according to my observations of two pet rabbits their hind feet, at least, are plantigrade--that is, they bend a lot when moving, but so do human feet. Certainly their default not-moving state involves back feet flat on the ground (unlike cats and dogs... but rabbits only have a "moving" and "sitting," no "standing" like cats and dogs have).

Hmm, now that you mention it, that makes sense. Rabbits do also have a "stand up" pose where they rest their back feet flat on the ground and stretch upwards -- it lets them see over grass.

I don't think of that as "standing up," at least not in the same way that cats and dogs stand up on all four paws--that's just on the back paws. But like you said, the back feet are flat on the ground. (Some of my cats do that too, but they look more like meerkats than rabbits.)

Ayla is plantigrade. I blame her father.

*grins* whether or not rabbit girls would be plantigrade, I don't know, but she's officially a jackelope-girl anyway. ;-)

right now, all she has is teeny tiny buds.

I think she's actually going to be an actual jackrabbit/antelope cross.

No he doesn't, he rides a freaking motorcycle. I am trying to figure out what it is about Aelfgar that makes Ayla have plantigrade feet XD

Weird genes?

I dunno, I decided she had flat feet and figured it had to be Aelfgar's fault.

Wiki says Marienne; according to the family tree, that's as far as I got with her (i.e., Marienne isn't related to anyone else).

Wow, I wonder when we are going to get to this in the story. I really want to see Alya's reaction - I wonder if this will allay her fears that the only reason people like her is because she's beautiful. Bunny-feet may take care of that...

Also, Wednesday, in terms of when.

I love it. You really got the feel right on both of them.

If Ioanna rubs Ayla's feet, will she then have good luck?

Yay!

I like the update. The darker bedspread enhances the contrast.

This needs comments too!

Poor Alya, she looks so alarmed! Which is appropriate.

I'm not sure the walls are cinder-block, but I'm also not sure what textures you could put there instead.

[identity profile] meeksp.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the blocks are based on my old dorm room more than anything. I'm stlll a few chapters behind, so I don't know if Ioanna's room has been described yet. Maybe the actual scene will suggest something better for the walls.

[personal profile] eseme 2011-05-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I get the impression of posh elegance in the halls, but I'm less sure about the students' rooms. Possibly poured concrete?

[identity profile] aldersprig.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so bad at description! The only time the rooms are ever described at all is "like a high-class hotel room" or something like that in one of Shahin's Book One chapters (the "what's wrong with this place" scene)

That being said, I picture them like RIT dorms - that helps you not at all, Meeks - in that it's poured concrete, painted calm neutral colors.

Ioanna looks younger than I expected her to - of course that could just be because the pictures in my head are wrong. :)

[identity profile] meeksp.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's a comment I get fairly often on my depictions of older teens/young adults...I'm terrible at judging ages, at least in part because most people in my family look about half as old as they are :P

BUNNY!

That was a great scene and I love the illustration! Heh, and I'm thinking it's not so much one ear flopping down as one ear being held up while being given the, "Wait! What's this!?" feelup.
