My good friend reymonkey recently adopted a new kitten, who has sadly fallen ill. The kitty has been taken to the vet and put on antibiotics, which should have her feeling better in a few days, but Rey could use some help with paying the bill. The number of new pictures I have to add to my database (not to mention the state of my sent mail folder) would seem to indicate that I've been far from idle over the past month...but I've failed miserably at tracking and delivering perks for StorySketches. Urk. I must fix that!

I posted an update to Teddy's Travels yesterday (which no one has commented on *sadface*), and I should have an update to Mother-Tongue sometime tomorrow. The next new sketch will be from Karen Wehrstein's Philosopher in Arms. Next icon draw will be held...er, actually, I might as well just do it now. Congrats to alee_grrl and wyld_dandelyon! I'll PM you after I post this in case you don't see it.

Something else I'm far behind on is reading the entries on my reading/friends page, but I notice that voting has started for several categories of this year's Rose and Bay awards. I also notice that ~~one of you~~aldersprig nominated me for the art category. *blushes* Thank you!

Lots of crowdfunding stuff going on this weekend!

aldersprig is holding her monthly Giraffe Call and taking prompts with the theme of "In the City". She has written The Origins of Smokey Knoll to my first prompt, and several donation targets have already been met, so now I have to think of another one!

It's Muse Fusion time at torn_world. You don't have to be a Torn World member to participate! Suggested themes for prompts this month include "Fashions and Fads" and "Critters of Land and Sea", but any Torn World related questions or ideas are welcome!

The third Crowdfunding Creative Jam is this weekend, with members of the crowdfunding communities on livejournal and dreamwidth taking prompts with the theme of "Disabled People (visibly and invisibly disabled)"! ysabetwordsmith has posted the poem Why Autistics Make Good Friends in response to one of my prompts, and she has written a Monster House poem related to another one, which can be sponsored for $10.

Update: The kickstarter campaign for Lorelei has a Dream is doing well, and has already reached 19% of its $9000 goal, after less than two days! Thanks to all who have participated so far!

I will be boarding a plane later tonight to go visit my family, and will be returning on Jan 18. As usual, I will be bringing my laptop, but I may be a bit slower to respond to messages due to the presence of live people.

The 48-hour SketchFest was quite a success! I did 12 paintings for it — enough to make up for missing last month. Coat of Arms has already sold, so I'll be cleaning it up to print, and copies of all the others are available through the SketchFest site.

ysabetwordsmith has posted a list of newly sponsored poetry that's now available to read. I think the Monster House poem Lurking is my favourite from this set. I love how accepting the family is of all the oddities that share their home.

alexandraerin started Book 3 of Tales of MU volume 2 with the return of Some kind of ridiculous owl-turtle thing. I'm hoping that means we'll be seeing more of Dee and Two in this book.

chaoticidealism is wondering how to participate in a conversation without interrupting. This is something I've struggled with, myself, so any advice from the more socially capable among you will be appreciated!

And, finally: I have learned that there is a recording of David Tennant and Catherine Tate in Much Ado About Nothing. Let the *squee*-ing commence!

Apparently my throat is swollen in response to a virus, and there's nothing I can do about it but keep taking my vitamins, try to stay hydrated, and wait for it to go away. I'm trying to keep working, but I get tired pretty fast since I can't quite breathe properly.

Plans for today are to finish up last week's icons and continue working on my sketch for Mother-Tongue. I've been doing quite a bit of research for this one, and I keep getting distracted by interesting articles on anglo-saxon art history :P

Wacom is slowly starting to fill pre-orders for the Inkling on Amazon, which hopefully means it will also be available for general distribution soon. I'll be offering ink sketches to anyone who's willing to help me buy one, so keep an eye out for a post with more details over the next couple of days!

The cold medicine I took at bedtime turned out to be non-drowsy, so I didn't get much sleep. -_- I shall have to brave the cold and rain to get some that isn't.

I'm preparing to do a Story Sketch based on jjhunter's excellent Beowulf poem Mother-Tongue, and while browsing the web for visual references, I came across this. The TARDIS in the Bayeux Tapestry. My inner Doctor Who and art history geeks were trying to out-*squeee* each other. XD

aldersprig has been posting the results of her latest Giraffe Call, including an answer to my prompt that makes me want to a) read more, and b) get to that picture of Zizny looking over the wall.

I'm off to the library to pick up another book on children's book (writing and) illustration. I've been reading a lot on this topic lately, and it's amazing how much some things have changed since most of the books I've found were published. They're still talking about sending slides or transparencies, faxing sketches, and scheduling visits to publishers for in-person portfolio reviews. A few still say that it's rare for interior illustrations to use more than 1-2 colours. Nearly all picture books these days have four colour printing inside and out, some use extra spot colours in the text or special effects like metallic inks and spot gloss on the covers. All of the current submission guidelines I've come across call for high quality prints, electronic files, and links to online portfolios. (If you're wondering why I bother reading outdated books, it's because they still do have useful information...things like the principles of composition, character design, and storytelling aren't dependent on technology.)

It's Monday again, isn't it? I have to catch up on filing my e-mail so I can get back to picking weekly icon winners... I've been back for almost two weeks, but I'm still struggling to find my routine >.<

aldersprig wrote this Dragons Next Door story in response to my prompt about a ghostly giraffe. She also posted a reply to my prompt about undead in the DND 'verse earlier in this Giraffe Call.
