Apparently my throat is swollen in response to a virus, and there's nothing I can do about it but keep taking my vitamins, try to stay hydrated, and wait for it to go away. I'm trying to keep working, but I get tired pretty fast since I can't quite breathe properly.

Plans for today are to finish up last week's icons and continue working on my sketch for Mother-Tongue. I've been doing quite a bit of research for this one, and I keep getting distracted by interesting articles on anglo-saxon art history :P

Wacom is slowly starting to fill pre-orders for the Inkling on Amazon, which hopefully means it will also be available for general distribution soon. I'll be offering ink sketches to anyone who's willing to help me buy one, so keep an eye out for a post with more details over the next couple of days!

[personal profile] aldersprig has written more of the conversation between Audrey and Zizny! We learn a new pronoun, and Zizny proves to be too perceptive for Aud's comfort.

The cold medicine I took at bedtime turned out to be non-drowsy, so I didn't get much sleep. -_- I shall have to brave the cold and rain to get some that isn't.

I'm preparing to do a Story Sketch based on [personal profile] jjhunter's excellent Beowulf poem Mother-Tongue, and while browsing the web for visual references, I came across this. The TARDIS in the Bayeux Tapestry. My inner Doctor Who and art history geeks were trying to out-*squeee* each other. XD

[personal profile] aldersprig has been posting the results of her latest Giraffe Call, including an answer to my prompt that makes me want to a) read more, and b) get to that picture of Zizny looking over the wall.

I'm off to the library to pick up another book on children's book (writing and) illustration. I've been reading a lot on this topic lately, and it's amazing how much some things have changed since most of the books I've found were published. They're still talking about sending slides or transparencies, faxing sketches, and scheduling visits to publishers for in-person portfolio reviews. A few still say that it's rare for interior illustrations to use more than 1-2 colours. Nearly all picture books these days have four colour printing inside and out, some use extra spot colours in the text or special effects like metallic inks and spot gloss on the covers. All of the current submission guidelines I've come across call for high quality prints, electronic files, and links to online portfolios. (If you're wondering why I bother reading outdated books, it's because they still do have useful information...things like the principles of composition, character design, and storytelling aren't dependent on technology.)

It's Monday again, isn't it? I have to catch up on filing my e-mail so I can get back to picking weekly icon winners... I've been back for almost two weeks, but I'm still struggling to find my routine >.<

People have been writing to my prompts! [personal profile] kajones_writing posted this story from her Afterlife series, based on the Sacred Calling pic I did for SketchFest. See how a new spirit guide reacts to an angel!

[personal profile] aldersprig wrote this Dragons Next Door story in response to my prompt about a ghostly giraffe. She also posted a reply to my prompt about undead in the DND 'verse earlier in this Giraffe Call.

In case you missed my announcement yesterday, I've made a change to the perk structure for Story Sketches. There will now be an update posted for every $15 I get for an image!

So far, that means I owe you another round of work on Rin and Teddy's Terrific Travels. Actually, two on Teddy, since I was already planning to clean it up in response to your feedback :) I'll work on it today/tomorrow, post it so you have a chance to comment, and then put it back in the queue for the second round.

[personal profile] haikujaguar wrote a post about payment models for crowdfunding. She was specifically writing about fiction, but the "pay to vote" model she described got me thinking. I already do specific revisions in exchange for tips, of course, but maybe each tip could also count as a vote so that the sketch that has received the most tips gets another round of work...similar to my current perk for linkbacks. This is something I already track, so it wouldn't be difficult to implement using either the number of individual contributors, or the actual dollar amounts. The latter seems a bit less democratic, since it favours those who are most willing/able to spend money, but I do have other perks for non-cash support methods. What do you think?

linky!
[personal profile] ariestess is hosting a one card draw until midnight PDT. She has a variety of decks to choose from, and tipping gets you a chance to win a more in-depth reading.

[personal profile] aldersprig is holding a fiction sale! She has two stories available to be continued at a discounted rate of $4/500 words. Her other stories can be continued for $5 per 300 words.

[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion is scanning her abstracts as they dry. You can still donate to get the available original ACEOs, or prints of any of them!

Diapering Dragons(LJ) was the clear winner in the poll, with five out of the fifteen votes. I know I have to fix the corner of the room, but feel free to leave a comment if there are any other changes (or additions) you'd like to see!

I've updated the linkback counts on all the sketch posts based on pingback notifications and what I could find. If you've linked somewhere that you think I may have missed, please let me know! Of the eligible sketches, Rin is currently in the lead.

Links: Prompted fiction is popular these days!
[personal profile] aldersprig has posted a summary of the stories she wrote from her latest call for prompts.

[livejournal.com profile] ankewehner is now taking prompts for science-fiction stories.

[livejournal.com profile] moonwolf1988 is also looking for writing prompts, and has promised to post bonus material for every ten prompts received!

I just got back from the optometrist, who gave me a prescription for computer glasses, one for allergy eye drops...and a really big bill -_- The new glasses should do a lot to alleviate the strain of looking at a screen all day, so I can spend more time making art! Now I just have to decide whether I prefer bronze or silver for the frames...

[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion is now taking prompts for free abstract paintings! Tips are optional, but she has some great perks for everyone who donates, including (animated!)icons, original ACEOs, and bigger paintings.

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posted an article yesterday about People who boost the signal in crowdfunding". I'd love to see what supporters think about this. What motivates you to promote a project? What kind of perks to you like in exchange?

I'm working through the comment notifications that have accumulated over the past few days, and it looks like Elemental now has enough comments to be cleaned up! I've been wanting to work on the flame some more since I first drew it, thank you! [livejournal.com profile] wyld_dandelyon has promised to write more of her Feather-blessed series when I refine the sketch I did for her, so I'll be bumping it up in the queue to work on it between new prompts. (Yes, I can be bribed with stories. ^_^) I think translating the full-colour picture I imagined into a rough sketch left a lot unclear, so I'm glad to be able to fix it up a bit :)

Signal boosts for fellow crowdfunded artists:
[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion will be taking prompts for abstract paintings on Tuesday, August 9. Tips go toward buying blackout curtains for the nursery she's building, and donors can send prompts in advance. Tips of various amounts can also earn you icons, original ACEOs and larger paintings!

I tried to take a nap yesterday evening, and ended up sleeping for 11 hours...guess I was even more tired than I thought ^_^; Oh well...I'm going to have some breakfast then get back to sketching.

some stuff from my reading page:

[personal profile] aldersprighas a new Stranded World story available for sponsorship! She also has a poll going to determine which story to sponsor with her current funds.

[livejournal.com profile] wyld_dandelyon is seeking opinions for her next card draw. Let her know when, and what decks you prefer!

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith will be hosting a Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday, August 2, with the theme "corruption and redemption" so start thinking up prompts!

It's the day for prompted artwork! My post is up at the LJ-crowdfunding community, along with posts by ellenmillion and djinni about their own prompted art projects.

SketchFest 16 will be starting in a couple of hours, so I'll be playing over there after lunch. I will again be posting to facebook and twitter as I finish each sketch, so keep an eye on those for updates throughout the day!

Not much to report here...just continuing with the drawing I started yesterday, so here's some stuff that's going on elsewhere:

[personal profile] aldersprig has posted Sharing Stories, a Dragons Next Door story that grew out of the discussion prompted by my Diapering Dragons sketch. *glee!*

The crowdfunding community is in the spotlight this week over on Livejournal, and [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has made a convenient list of the content posts that have been made so far.

[livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar is hosting an awesome party for her subscribers to get to know each other! This is the sort of thing that would be instantly overwhelming to me IRL, but I think doing it online is a fantastic idea! Threaded comments are the perfect format for it, too, since they make it possible to follow different conversations at a manageable pace.

I got a tip for my Diapering Dragons sketch! Thank you! I would have acknowledged my supporter yesterday, but I didn't go through all my e-mail before posting...

With nothing but rain in the forecast, of course I have to go out to run more errands today :P, but I'll continue to work on Shine On when I get back.

Some links:

[livejournal.com profile] kelkyag and [personal profile] aldersprig are continuing to discuss dragon sizes and growth and it seems to have spawned a new story idea! *glee* Aldersprig is already a very prolific writer, but I'm always happy to read more :)

[personal profile] ariestess is offering a free one-card draw until 1500 PDT, and is also taking commissions on more in-depth readings. She has several options for non-tarot divination, and I've been very pleased with the readings she's done for me.

[personal profile] moonvoice has posted ink drawings from her latest totems, and has one more commission slot available! The skill and speed with which she crafts these never fails to astound me o.O
