This is the home of an artist in perpetual need of ideas.

I do crowdfunded illustration for independent writers and their fans, so if you're an author, and you'd like some artwork, please check out my call for prompts to learn how to request a story sketch of your own!

Or, browse the posts with the art tag, and take a look at what I've drawn for others. You might discover something new to read!

Feedback helps me learn! Feel free to let me know what you think, even especially if there's something I need to improve - and please consider leaving a tip if you do like what you see. Your participation can prompt more work on an image :)

I am also available to take commissions if you'd like me to draw something for you that isn't a story.

A little while ago I came across a vest made of teddy bear fabric. It didn't fit quite right, and felt a bit unfinished without a lining, but it was really cute and only ~$5, so I got it anyway, thinking it would make a good base for a sewing project. After a trip to the fabric store, and a few hours with my sewing machine, I had an inner vest, made and added a ribbon to the back and put a bit of red trim in front to match, and (with thanks to my dad for giving me his 'old' DSLR) I'm happy to be able to share the results!

Wishing a happy Easter to those who celebrate it, and a pleasant, chocolate-filled weekend to all!

Aaaand Lorelei also is an egg!

I bring you...Loregglei Hedgehog!

A silly bit of crossover art that I did over the weekend, featuring characters from Terry Pratchett's Discworld and Neil Gaiman's Sandman. This took me a lot longer than I expected in ArtRage, and I only realized after it was done that it probably would have been easier to do most of it in Illustrator first. Oh, well...

Still learning

The Vancouver Public Library hosted a panel last night on the topic of "Getting Started in Children's Books" and I actually managed to get over my anxiety long enough to attend! There was an illustrator there, along with a good mix of fiction and non-fiction, middle grade and YA writers, including one who shared her experience with independently publishing a second edition of her out-of-print book. Each panelist spoke briefly about her work and how she got started in the industry, and then they started taking questions from the audience.

I've done a fair amount of research on my own, so much of the information presented was not new to me, but I did appreciate the personal accounts of working with editors and agents. I was interested to learn that most canadian publishers are more willing than their US counterparts to accept manuscripts directly from authors without going through an agent. It was good to meet some local people with similar interests to mine, and —if you'll permit me a moment of blatant self-praise— rather gratifying to see that I can create a professional looking product, and that the design work I've done for mikaspace and EDST is really not bad. Thank you, J, for training me to be picky!

What is somewhat less encouraging, is that I'm becoming increasingly convinced that I will have to find a way to outsource marketing/sales/promotional tasks if I'm to continue as an illustrator. I'm searching for a more stable source of income while I try to develop my portfolio and put together a new promotional mailer, and I hope that some day I'll be able to afford it :P

After an absence of several months, I finally managed to participate in Sketch Fest again! I only did five sketches this weekend, but it's nice to know I haven't completely forgotten how to draw :P

Prompt: Matsu
This one is a multilingual pun: "Matsu" is both a chinese sea goddess and the japanese word for 'to wait'

Prompt: Web Sight

Prompt: A face in the forest

Prompt: Selfportrait -- together with one of your own characters

Prompt: Nice big sweater

*HUGS* and very belatedLunar New Year's greetings to you all! I have returned home after a stimulating and much needed séjour in Asia, during which my access to the internet was unexpectedly limited. (Okay, I did kind of expect it in the Philippines, but you'd think TOKYO would have better wi-fi coverage...) Much of the trip wasn't exactly what I'd call a relaxing holiday, but the reprieve from Vancouver's winter rainfall was more than welcome. I saw more family members from both sides of the family than I even knew I had, visited places I'd never seen before, and got to spend time with Julien, so overall it was a pleasant and refreshing vacation. ^_^

I was several weeks late for my regular chiropractic adjustment, and my body clock, which has synchronization problems at the best of times, now seems to think it's a TARDIS, so it's taking me some time to recover from travelling, but I am feeling more creative than I have in a very long time. I am slowly easing back into artmaking with some small sewing projects; putting some inspiring fabric end rolls I picked up to good use. I'm also eager to work on Lorelei Makes a Friend while I still have Japan on the brain so I can picture Tanuki Jiro's environment.

Speaking of Lorelei, [livejournal.com profile] ego_sideways and I took advantage of the cheap production costs in the Philippines to have a small run of shirts made for friends and family. Limited stock and turnaround time prevented me from offering them to a wider audience. Would there be any interest if I were to upload these designs to Zazzle, or the like?

Another Inkling doodle, this time with some touch-ups done in Art Rage. Haven't had the courage to try colouring, but I'm slowly working back up to it...

Back to basics

I'm slooowly trying to get back into drawing again and finally taking some time to familiarize myself with using the Inkling with Sketchbook Pro. So far, I'm quite pleased with the combination, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the sketches some of you requested will turn out.
For now, I recreated the first exercise from all my introductory classes in art school, and just did some quick (<10 min) sketches. It's been a long time since I've done something like this, and I rather like how the simplicity and familiarity of the subject let my brain sort of switch off so I could focus on getting used to holding a pen again...

Slow progress

After months of ill health, more visits to the doctor than I care to recall, and several weeks of meds, I'm feeling...not quite human, but at least like a somewhat higher level form of undead than the zombie I've resembled lately. With a bit of luck this ameliorative trend won't be overly hindered by the rapidly approaching rainy season. I miss you all, and I'm desperately looking forward to the (hopefully not too distant) day when I can get back to making art!

So apparently I wasn't done being sick. I'm able to move around a bit now, but I still get a headache if I sit at my desk too long, so I'm staying mostly afk (and away from tablet) to avoid making it worse. Apologies to those of you still awaiting art.

Sorry for the delay, everyone! I was feeling pretty sick from Sunday afternoon through most of yesterday, so I didn't get around to posting these until now. I did seven paintings over the weekend, including "Bathing Time", which is probably the most popular Sketch Fest piece I've ever done!

prompt: Fell through

prompt: bathing time

prompt: catch me if you can

prompt: feeding a friend

prompt: shutter bug

prompt: an army of potato golems armed with garden implements

prompt: baby dragons waddling across the highway

I'm taking a break from working on meeksmas art to go play at Sketch Fest this weekend! My fellow artists and I will be taking prompts until noon (Alaska time) on Sunday, so come join the fun! As usual, I will be posting individual pictures to Facebook and twitter and the whole set here when they're all done. You can also keep an eye on my artist page for new additions. :)

It's my birthday tomorrow, and I want to make you some art to celebrate! Last year's icon sale was a great success, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with for me to draw this time!

You set the prices!

Tips of $1 or more get you an icon, 100 x 100 pixels, featuring the subject of your choice.

Tips of $5 or more get you a sketch based on your prompt! These will be 700 pixels on the longest side, and of about the same level of complexity as my Sketch Fest work.

I love discovering new stories to read, but I'd like to get these done in a reasonable amount of time, so in order to minimize the amount of reading/research involved, please try to limit yourself to twitter-length prompts (~140 characters). Links to reference pics or character descriptions are welcome, but if you want to link me to a novel, please consider requesting a Story Sketch instead. Unless you ask for something that would look better in monochrome, all artwork will be full colour.

I recently found out that the local art school holds open life drawing sessions over the summer, so proceeds from this sale will go toward studio fees and art supplies. It's been a long time since I've drawn from a live model, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Bonus! Last year's event brought in $29 in tips; equal to the age I was turning. If tips reach or exceed $30 this year, all participants will be entered in a draw to receive a free figure drawing, on actual paper!

Get your art here!

Or let me know if you'd like to use an alternate payment service.

I'm considering doing an icon/sketch sale for my birthday this weekend, would anyone here be interested? I could use a break from all the nitpicky portfolio stuff I've been working on :P

This is a scene from the second book of [personal profile] wonder_city stories, in which Watson takes Megan to the shop run by her younger sister, Death, and her husbands, hoping to find a lead in a string of recent murders.
